The project CUSTOM 4 was born in the summer of 2016. From the first notes that they played together, these four musicians realized the huge potential that this very original and free-flowing music could offer… Renowned tenor saxophonist Carlo Atti is backed by an exciting and innovative rhythm section that has an almost telepathic interplay throughout their musical ventures. Together with the always present jazz and post-bop aesthetic of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock and Micheal Brecker, the group is able to draw inspiration, without prejudice, from the black Afro-American musical tradition as well as the Classical European tradition. One can detect constant references to the funk of James Brown, Joshua Redman, the hip-hop of d’Angelo, Meshell Ndegeocello, Robert Glasper, all lavished with the harmonic concepts of Bach, Debussy and Stravinsky.
Given this musical melting pot, the name for this collective seemed obvious from the start… CUSTOM 4.
The quartet line-up is as follows: Carlo Atti on tenor sax, Nahuel Schiumarini on guitars, Blake C. S. Franchetto on bass, Marco Frattini on drums.
The music which they offer in their latest album SEASIDE JUNKIE combines the aforementioned influences, original compositions, a handful of jazz standards reworked for this new aesthetic, a special guest appearance by Siena Jazz trumpeter David Boato and a unique band sound that does not come across, as all too often happens in jazz, as many individuals playing side by side, but as 4 components working together in unison, all of which guarantees originality and high quality music.
