“Meccanica e Natura” (following “D’Istanti” – 2005 and “In Mediatamente” – 2007) is the third recording episode of the band JOLAURLO, an album which is pure inner “space” science fiction, where the band melts the aggressive and instinctive nature of punk rock with the rationality of electronic music; the sensuality and intimacy of folk with the fresh honesty of pop.
The album was produced thanks to the fan’s commitment, through an initiative called “Se noi lo facciamo tu low fi?” (If we do it, will you do it?), and received the Innovation Award at M.E.I. 2010 (the Italian indie labels convention). The CD cover mentions all the JOLAURLO fans who bought a ticket for their 2010 tour and became producers of their third album. Even the title “Meccanica e Natura” was chosen by the public through a contest on the band’s website. An original idea, a kind of true popular stock-holding, totally new to the Italian record industry.
During the past few years of recording silence, following great experiences like the Mayday Concert 2008 in Rome and supporting Iggy Pop, Siouxie and the Banshees, Gogol Bordello, and Franco Battiato, JOLAURLO have been developing an electronic sound with strong rock and punk-wave influences, mixed with what can be defined as new rave, electro-punk, with hints of the techno pop of early Devo, Ultravox and Soft Cell. The words are more on a metaphorical vein than in the past. Marzia Stano, front woman and writer of the band’s lyrics, stands away from the photographic description of her reality to build a “miniature universe where mechanics and nature live together in peace”, with stories of parallel worlds inhabited by “androids” and “polystyrene”, the “chaos” of a trembling society, the irony of a dancing world in “Banale” and the defeat of the fear of showing what oneself really is, as in the song “Senza Paura” with Sarah Fornito, lead singer of female rock band Diva Scarlet, as guest vocalist. From 23rd to 26th March 2011 JOLAURLO shared the whole Italian tour of German-French band Stereo Total.
The album was recorded mainly at a home studio and at 100b Studio in Bologna, mixed by Ale Bavo and Gianni Condina at Casasonica in Turin (LN Ripley, Subsonica, Velvet, Assalti Frontali, PostalMarket). The mastering was done by Mike Marsh (Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, The XX) at the Exchange Studio in London.
JOLAURLO and IRMA records won the first edition of the Push Up award in Bisceglie (Puglia). Their victory was voted by a respected jury, composed by Stefano Senardi (Sugar), Giordano Sangiorgi (M.E.I.), Luca De Gennaro (MTV), Federico Guglielmi (Il Mucchio Selvaggio, RadioRai) and Antonio Princigalli (Puglia Sounds). The band and the label will be supported at promotional and touring level by Push Up’s staff, with an investment of 16K € on these two activities.
